This large tableau was created as a character study for Shipwreck at the very beginning of the drawing work. Oishi, our hero, can be seen in an all-decisive battle. Inspired by classic Japanese woodblock prints, Battle Royal is without doubt one of Paul Rietzl’s masterpieces. Printing the work on Finnish cardboard gives the picture an additional charm, both through the special surface and the specifc fuzzy absorption of the colour in the material.
